Huge Matters
a moment of yourself
to what really matters…giving…
What is this page?
Simply an opportunity I choose to take to remind us all to take a moment outside of ourselves.
Today I’m looking forward to attending the Empty Bowl fundraiser here in Fredericksburg. It benefits a local charity connected to a much greater problem - domestic violence. Fredericksburg potters Phil and Trista Chapman began the fundraiser seven years ago and continue to support The Rappahannock Council on Domestic Violence with this annual event. Local potters craft soup bowls. Local restaurants and private citizens donate soups, breads, drinks and deserts. Local businesses provide floral table decorations. Individuals who care support the event with their musical talents or simply lend a hand with setup, serving and cleaning up. This year, 500 tickets were sold at $35 a piece providing $17,500 for the RCDV to continue running local programs.
Domestic violence is an “unseen” problem and federal funding for support programs is a constant battle. Currently the Domestic Violence Against Women Act has expired and is stuck in the budget battles of our government. Bogged down by add-ons to the proposal, the debate continues as vital programs are put on hold. Write your local congressperson to support the VAWA with funding opportunities for emergency shelters, victim advocacy, support groups, intervention and prevention programs and community education programs for teens.
It is up to each of us individually to support local programs by giving of our time and talents. Despite personal illness, Phil and Trista are two people with a cause at heart and are doing something about it. I intend to be a part too. Won’t you?
Contact the RCDV (540-373-9372 or office@rcdv.com) to be a part.
